MK Marlow Company is excited to announce it is a 2021 winner of the ABC – South Texas Chapter Excellence In Construction Awards. Winning for the Canopy By Hilton San Antonio River Walk project, we were thrilled to partner with Sundt Construction, the general contractor.
MK Marlow Company, LLC provided the interior and exterior framing, gypsum wall assemblies, ceilings, and plaster for the new 21-story, $45,000,000 boutique hotel located on N. St. Mary’s Street near E. Commerce in downtown San Antonio, Texas. The 144,500 SF building features 3,000 SF of meeting space, 195 guest rooms and suites, a restaurant, bar, and an outdoor terrace that overlooks the San Antonio River Walk.
A challenge to overcome for this project was the difference in square footage of the hotel from the basement to level three and how it expanded to accommodate levels four to twenty-one. At ground level, the smaller square footage established the structural base for the hotel. At level four, the footprint enlarged by incorporating a second foundation that expanded over the structure on three of the four sides of the building, providing the extra floor space needed for the rooms.
Working together, the Sundt and MK Marlow teams designed a scaffold and engineered it to cantilever itself from the third floor of the building to extend out and up over the Esquire Tavern’s roof, allowing framing and stucco work to continue in an otherwise unreachable location. This created a unique work environment that required careful sequencing and safety standards. The finished hotel is beautiful and we are so happy to have been a part of the construction.
